Get 20% off your new boat!! - 2/2/2012

The Kayaks Northwest boat Scrappage and Re-cycling Scheme

20% off your new boat!!

Do you have or know someone who has old, worn out or perhaps broken boats just lying around the garage or garden??

Would you like to get rid of them in a way which helps the environment and gives your old boat a new life?

Would you like to make a huge saving on your new boat?

Then we have some good news!! Kayaks Northwest now offers a kayak scrappage scheme to do just that!

Simply bring your old or damaged boat into the shop here at Marina Village and we will ensure that every recyclable part of your boat will be used again. We will also give you a huge 20% off the price of your new boat! Getting you back out on the water as soon as possible with a smug grin, knowing you have given your old boat a new life!

We will pass the boat onto the good chaps at the Pyranha factory who will strip the boat of the various parts and materials, leaving just the shell of the boat its-self. The parts wil be sent away to be re-cycled by specialists and the shell will stay with us to be processed.

The shell will then be passed through a grinding machine which leaves us with small pieces that resemble gravel. The recycled material is then sent away to be cleaned, returned to us ready for use and placed with the virgin powder to be used in the production of new boats and other parts like seats and pillars.

This recycled powder is then used in smaller quantities to produce Venture Kayaks which are all partly re-cycled material, while sometimes we will produce entirely re-cycled boats.

The boats made entirely from re-cycled material have a very unique and distinctive look, guaranteeing that the boat will be set apart from the crowd and ready for another life time on the water.

Terms and Conditions:

We will recycle any plastic kayak.
We can only re use the material from Pyranha single layer kayaks manufactured from 1998 onwards in the manufacture of new kayaks (we need to know what is going back in!)
All other plastic will be granulated and sent for recycling into none structural products.
All outfitting must be removed before return.

Only one 20% discount is allowed per kayak purchase.
Purchase must be made on the day of return for discount to be applied.
You must bring the old kayak to Kayaks North West for the discount to be applied.
We have the right to refuse any kayak into the scheme.
The scrappage scheme discount only applies to new boats and can not be used in conjunction with any other offer or discount scheme.

Please call or Email for further details - 01928 710770 or sales@kayaksnorthwest.co.uk

OS Maps now in stock! - 7/9/2011

Ever got lost on the way to a river?  Let's face it, we all have!

While guidebooks tend to have very detailed maps of the area around a particular run or trip, with put-ins, take -outs, landmarks etc. all marked, they can sometimes be left a bit lacking in guidance to the wider area, and often, finding your way to the put in is an adventure in itself!

We at KNW decided that we'd rather be spending the time on the water than trying to find it, so we've stocked up on a selection of Ordnance Survey maps for popular paddling destinations.  Great to have in the car and essential for a trip into the unknown - and a bargain at only £7.99 each!   If you're planning a trip somwhere a bit more obscure, give us a shout, we can order in most OS maps for the UK and some for further afield as well...

Never get lost on your boating travels again - there's no excuse now!

Safety - not just a word...a way of life... - 4/11/2011

What a fantastic weekend it's been, with parts of Britain warmer than Greece, apparently...

We at KNW were to be found on the Dee at Llangollen on Sunday, brushing up on a few safety and rescue skills and generally larking about, along with Rich Taylor and Liz Forshaw from Pyranha, and our coach for the day Dan 'the Big Deal,' Butler.

There could hardly be a better day for splashing about in the river, so we spent the morning praciticing rescue techniques with a variety of different boats.

Coach Butler passing on key tips and handy hints.

 Concentration is the key...

After a leisurely lunch in the sunshine, we headed up river to cover some moving water swimming and to generally have a bit of a paddle.  Wales is pretty similar to the Sahara water-wise at the moment, so the Dee was absolutely packed, with something of a carnival atmosphere

Dan and Matt demonstrate paddler extraction...

There was even time for a few runs of Serpents Tail in the open boats

Liz Forshaw                                                            Tom Parker - minus beard and tilley hat

Rich Tayor giving it some!

All in all a cracking day on the water, followed by a couple of cold ones in the Corn Mill...Roll on Summer Boating!!!

Liz premiering the 'hold on tight and scream,' method of canoeing.                                       Dan.  Doing his thaang...

In a flap... - 12/10/2010

Literally anything can happen in a kayak shop...

Imagine our surprise when halfway through an ordinary Friday morning, an RSPCA officer appeared, in search of help rescuing a stranded Swan.  Undeterred, Matt and I leapt into action and began to assemble a dedicated Swan extraction kit, which consisted of:

  • 1 Feelfree Corona,
  • 1 Canoe Pole and
  • 1 Throwline.

The Swan in question was trapped on the ice in the middle of the canal, round the corner from the shop.

The Swan had been trapped on the ice for over 24 hours

The ice on the canal is still pretty thick, and we couldn't break it easily, so we elected to put the boat on the ice and push the RSPCA officer out to the Swan using our handy Canoe Pole.

From this position he tried to hook the Swan to safety.  The Swan objected slightly, but with a bit of perseverence, and a long hooking device, the Officer was able to pull the Swan onto his craft.

We then hauled the boat back to the waters' edge so it's feathered passenger could be lifted on to dry land.  The RSPCA chaps suspected it was dehydrated and in need of some food and water.

One (hopefully) grateful Swan, ready for a check up and a good meal.

While the Feelfree Corona was not designed with Wild Life Rescue in mind, on this occasion it was just the job and the Swan and it's Rescuer were both returned to dry land with minimal effort and (in the rescuer's case) with dry socks and shoes!

So there you have it...the FeelFree Corona...as used by the RSPCA!

Sun Kosi - Nepal - 12/1/2010

 Hi All!

I hope the weather isn't affecting people too badly, but just in case you are stuck at home or the office i thought it was time to put some photos and tales online following my recent trip to Nepal.

Myself, Liz Forshaw, Steve (husky) Cooper,Rich Taylor and his dad Dave Taylor departed from Heathrow after an incredibly easy process of checking the boats (seriously, i've never known it to be so smooth!!). We had a small stop over in Dakha on the way but eventualy made it to Kathmandu with only a 4 hour delay (but a free curry) to talk about.

Once in Nepal, we were met by the rest of our team, all eager to help and glad to see us (as they had been waiting for approx 5 hours! oops) there to greet us were older Matt and younger Dave and of course the guru himself, Mr Daz Clarkson who had a taxi waiting and ready to take us to a bed and some beer.

After a small amount of sleep, we were of to the river. As some of you will know, traveling in Nepal is definatly an experience but luckely we had Daz on the case and following an amazing bus trip on the main road out to Tibet we arrived at "the last resort" a place which seemed like heaven.

From this point onward, we enjoyed 10 days of warm boating, on big water, in one of the most memorable places on earth. along with 10 nights of sleeping under tarps, and enjoying Nepalese food cooked by our fantastic raft guide and his team. I'll let the photos tell you more.....

The Sun Kosi was a fantastic adventure for all, delivering some fantastic river days with play spots glore usualt followed by a pushy section, the most memorable being Hakapur. This little class 5- monster certainly had spice and was also a place of mourning for our Nepalese support team, as a close friend of their's had died while running it the year before. A prayer flag was laid for him and those that chose to run it did so without incident.

The Varun Large Arrives... - 11/30/2010

The first brand new Varun Large from Pyranha has just hit the KNW shelves.

With all the great features of the Varun Medium, the Large brings great all round river performance to the larger paddler; it'll cartwheel for hours, blast and spin with the greatest of ease, and stern squirt like a dream without sacrificing the speed and maneoverability needed to nail those down river moves.  We absolutely love the Varun Medium and the Large is set to continue in the same vein of all round fun, happy in a hole, on a wave or even on that cheeky boof on your local run, it'll put a smile on your face!

Specs:
Length 220cm / 7'2''
Width 66.5 / 26''
Volume TBC
Weight 16.2kg / 35.8lbs

For more information, have a look here...

Saturday evening play time - 8/16/2010

After a long day in the office myself and Dave decided the time was right to get out on the water and take the new Pyranha Varun with us!

We also took a Molan along to allow us to compare the boats directly, and on the same features. The first thing to report is the amount of foot room we found in the Varun, not to say that the Molan is tight on the feet either but i could stretch my legs out straight in this boat!

On the water the Varun performed smoothly, precisely and gave a great sense of confidence while surfing and spinning.

The Varun has a super smooth and fast hull which will work well on waves: unfortunately the nature of the features on this river meant we couldn't test this particular element of the Varun too well but we can say with confidence that while the Molan may still be your boat of choice for holes or looping, the Varun will make using the whole river an option again, from simple surfing to endless cartwheels or stern squirting but also rock splats!

We both had a great time in the Varun and will be looking forward to some full on wave action in the future, but instead of writing too much about it, all i'll say is "go paddle it!" and see for yourself. The Varun will be appearing at all the major shows over the comming season and will be available for demo at the shop from next week.

The KNW Team.

Sale Wall - 7/29/2010

Looking out the window right now, I'm begining to think that the white water season is just around the corner. Unfortunatly this also means the temprature will be dropping, and warm drinks needed.

So with this in mind we've added to our sale wall: NorthWater throwlines, Pro Tec Helmets and The YAK Dare cag to help people get out there as the weather starts to turn chilly all too soon.
